Taiwan is home to some 540,000 “new immigrants,” about 20,000 of whom live in Pingtung, according to the National Immigration Agency. In order to serve this community, the Pingtung County Government in 2003 began to set up new immigrant service centers in Pingtung City, Chaozhou, Donggang, and Hengchun, to speed immigrants’ integration into local society.
Little by little, these immigrants have gone from feeling like strangers to identifying with their new home. Today their influence is being felt in the community at large, where they express pride in their own heritages and act as the chief promoters of multiculturalism.
