In that first year, the magazine reported on a number of major construction projects underway across the island.
Among them, China Shipbuilding Corporation (now CSBC Corporation Taiwan) completed its Kaohsiung shipyard construction project ahead of schedule on June 1, 1976. And the port of Taichung was officially launched on October 31, a project for which the then Taiwan Provincial Government had responsibility. These two projects marked a new milestone for Taiwan’s overseas trade.
The nation’s economy grew rapidly during the 1970s. In 1976 construction of the Sun Yat-sen Freeway was underway, with the section from Taipei to Yangmei complete and open to traffic, and other sections progressing ahead of schedule. The entire 373.4-kilometer-long north–south freeway, with 37 interchanges and ten toll stations, was completed in 1978.
With the combined efforts of the nation’s people leading the way to a bright and beckoning future, the gradual achievement of the Ten Major Construction Projects was vital for Taiwan’s robust development, and became a major focus of the magazine in subsequent years.
Of the Ten Major Construction Projects, six were for transport, three for heavy industry, and one for energy.
